Ha sostenuto che i Greci hanno sviluppato due concezioni linguistiche: la concezione interessata al cambiamento linguistico, sia fonetico che semantico, come in Epicuro; e quella platonico-aristotelica, secondo cui la semantica era lo specchio dell’eterno ordine ontologico. Tuttavia, De Mauro ha anche notato che l’opposizione tra le due concezioni non è rigida, incoraggiando così l’approfondimento della ricerca.

The essay examines the constant interest that Tullio De Mauro has had for Greek theories on language. According to him, the Greeks developed two linguistic conceptions: the conception interested in linguistic change, both phonetic and semantic, as in Epicurus; and the Platonic-Aristotelian one, according to which semantics was the mirror of the eternal ontological order. However, over the years, De Mauro also noted that the opposition between the two conceptions is not really rigid, thus encouraging the deepening of research.
