The goal of this paper is to examine the treatment of immigration in the current Italian press via the analysis of the visual choices used in the journalistic representation of immigrants in an illustrative sample of multimodal texts. The texts selected were published in 2016 in two Italian newspapers, Il Giornale and Il Giornale di Sicilia. The former is a right-wing, widely-read Italian newspaper, while the latter is published in Sicily (but distributed also elsewhere), one of the areas with the highest percentage of immigrants in Italy. For its framework of investigation, the study draws on the principles of critical discourse analysis and visual grammar in order to observe the main visual strategies used by the press to portray the immigrants under analysis. The study of the corpus of examples is intended to assist in the creation of a typology of the main ways in which immigrants are portrayed visually. The study reveals that immigrants are depicted dysphemistically, which means that the negative aspects of them and their arrival are highlighted. The results show that the general tendency is to represent immigrants as victims, distanced from the readers and as strangers and different from the majority group.
