Il contributo mira ad analizzare, dopo una breve rassegna del tripartito quadro (*h2eĝ- ‘guidare, condurre’; *h2eyĝ- e *h2eyg- ‘muoversi a balzi’; *keh2p- ‘afferrare, scattare’) delle radici indoeuropee ricostruibili per la voce ‘capra’, l’uso del termine nella toponomastica dell’italiano. In particolare, si analizzeranno i riflessi toponomastici dello zoonimo nella connotazione di località poste nei pressi di alture o movimenti di acqua, ipotizzando che tale caratteristica sia certamente frutto del dato logico e concreto, ma anche rintracciabile nella relazione tra l’animale e il movimento presente già nella radice stessa.

After a short review about the three Indo-European roots for ‘goat’ (*h2eĝ- ‘to lead, to conduct’; *h2eyĝ- and *h2eyg- ‘to jump’; *keh2p- ‘to snap’), the paper aims at investigating the use of the voice in the Italian toponymy. In particular, the toponymic reflexes of the zoonym will be analyzed according to the connotation of place names close to high ground or water movements, assuming that this characteristic is certainly the result of logical and concrete data, but also traceable in the relationship between the animal and the concept of movement already present in the root itself.
