The article analyses Luigi Pirandello’s stance on faith and religion. He directly tackled these topics in his poetry, short stories and plays and tried to find a solution to his personal impasse. In fact, on the one hand he did not believe in the existence of a supernatural entity and on the other he found that science could not satisfy the need for an understanding of one’s existence. Of interest, for the specific themes dealt with, which are representative of the discourse on faith present in several of his short stories, are Canta l’epistola, Il Tabernacolo and Un “Goj. In these novellas Pirandello faces fundamental questions of faith and religion, reaching often to opposite conclusions to those that are maintained in the drama Lazzaro that he will publish many years later. In the drama Lazzaro defined a “religious myth”, Pirandello re-proposes the conflicts present in “religious” novellas, but the theatrical piece, “with a happy ending,” offers a means to overcome the conflicts and contradictions that have often remained unsolved in the novellas.
