Il contributo offre una panoramica del contesto storico-letterario degli anni postrisorgimentali per poi focalizzarsi sulla funzione svolta dalla no­vella nel processo di rinnovamento della narrativa tout court. In questo periodo di transizione si inserisce la parabola di Renato Fucini, scrittore a lungo screditato dalla critica, ma che ha avuto una certa influenza negli anni dell’ascesa del verismo, come testimoniano sia la frequentazione dei luoghi più importanti della Firenze dell’epoca sia i contatti con Verga e Capuana.

The essay analyses the historical and literary context of the post-Risor­gimento period and then it focuses on the role performed by the short story in the renewal process of the narrative tout court. Renato Fucini, a writer discredited by many critics, during the years of the ascent of veris­mo achieved to a degree of notoriety: some evidence of his reputation are linked to the attendance in the 70’s of the most important places in Flor­ence and to the contacts with Verga and Capuana.
