La relazione tra frequenza e polisemia è ben nota alla statistica linguistica e studi recenti
indicano che vi è una relazione anche tra frequenza e omonimia. Questo lavoro presenta
dati relativi alla quantità di polisemia e omonimia nel lessico italiano di alta frequenza
(VdB) dai quali emerge una forte correlazione tra frequenza e ambiguità: la percentuale
di lessemi polisemici e di lessemi le cui forme hanno omonimi è molto maggiore nel VdB
che nel lessico complessivo (rispettivamente 89% vs. 19% e 55% vs. 10-24%). Ciò sembra
supportare l’ipotesi che l’ambiguità lessicale non sia un mero ostacolo alla comunicazione
bensì rappresenti un tratto semiotico necessario e positivo delle lingue.

The relationship between frequency and polysemy is well known in statistical linguistics, and recent works show that a relationship exists between frequency and homonymy, too. A quantitative analysis of polysemy and homonymy in high-frequency Italian lexicon (VdB) confirms that frequency and ambiguity are strongly related: the percentage of both polysemic lexemes and lexemes whose forms have homonyms is much greater in VdB than in the overall lexicon (respectively 89% vs. 19% and 55% vs. 10-24%). This finding seems to support the hypothesis that lexical ambiguity, far for being only an obstacle to communication, is a necessary and functional element of language architecture.
