L’intervento cerca di dimostrare che Il barone rampante (1957), nonostante sia un exploit più unico che raro nel contesto della narrativa calviniana, ha tuttavia molti legami sia con le opere calviniane che lo precedono sia con i libri futuri dello scrittore ligure. Si prendono in considerazione le tante opere calviniane in cui compaiono due fratelli e si nota il modello letterario per questo tipo di racconto nel Master of Ballantrae di R.L. Stevenson. Le altre radici del Barone si trovano nei classici della letteratura mondiale, soprattutto i grandi romanzi del Sette e Ottocento, da Defoe a Voltaire, Stendhal e Tolstoj. Infine l’intervento indaga i rapporti tra il Barone rampante e opere autobiografiche quali La speculazione edilizia e La strada di San Giovanni, e scopre collegamenti anche con libri postmoderni quali Le città invisibili e Il castello dei destini incrociati. Il Barone e un grande mosaico della letteratura mondiale e sotto la superficie uniforme del testo si possono scorgere tanti segni di quel che precede e quel che seguirà il romanzo più lungo di Calvino.
Aim of this paper is to show that although Il barone rampante (1957) is a unique work in Calvino’s narrative oeuvre, it nevertheless has many links with the narrative works that precede it as well as with the writer’s future output.
