After a brief excursus on the treatment of women in Greek society and ancient philosophy, this paper examines the role of women in the Epicurean school, especially at the time when Epicurus was still alive. Despite the fact that Epicurean women have been depicted only as courtesans by opponents of the Epicureanism, it is undeniable that they had a significant role in the Garden. They were considered genuine friends by Epicurus and they had the opportunity to improve their ethical behaviour just as men did.
