In this article we analyze the semantic and translational aspects of the Russian expression “byt’ celovekom” (being a man; being a human being). We propose the translation of some extracts from literary works, poems, and publicizing texts, containing the analyzed expression. The article reflects on the polysemy of the term  “celovek”, on the disparate differences with the Italian word “man”, on the translation rendering of the Russian term in Italian.
