David Armstrong and Michael McOsker have produced a new edition of Philodemus’ De Ira (PHerc. 182), accompanied by an English translation and a lengthy introduction. The edition is warranted because of a number of advances in the study of the Herculaneum papyri. This article summarizes the philosophical results of our work: it provides (§II) an outline of the surviving treatise, (§III) a summary of Philodemus’ views and (§IV) those of his opponents, and (§V) sets his views in the context of his school.
